This is the 2nd time we are facing a water crisis. We have taken several measures over the last few years including 100% rainwater harvesting, 100% grey-water recycling, and recharge wells for our bore wells. However, we can’t manage the climate. These are the steps we are taking to manage the crisis in the immediate and long terms.
The 21 day India lock down has deepened our problems as our food and water trucks are stuck in different parts of the city and are unable to reach us. Villagers are barricading roads and stopping truck movement around VOSD Sanctuary.
Today is day 2 of the 21 day lock down. We somehow managed to purchase and transport 2 tons of rice and 1 ton of chicken to VOSD thanks to our team which has been on the ground day and night with Police, other authorities and sellers to make this happen! The prices of the essential items like rice and water have sky rocketed due to the short supply and there is tremendous financial pressure on us now.
IMMEDIATE/ CRITICAL MEASURES BEING TAKEN TO OVERCOME THE WATER CRISIS
● 3 tankers of water to be brought from 22 km away (Doddaballapur) each day. Cost Rs 5000-6000 per day
● Over 4 months this supply will cost Rs 720,000
STORAGE TO RIDE OUT EMERGENCIES
● We’ve begun construction of a 150,000 liter concrete underground storage tank. When full it will give us between 30-60 days of drinking water capacity to ride out emergencies. It will take 2 months to be able to get ready and store water.
● Budgeted cost of construction (underway) Rs 14,00,000
UPGRADE OF 3 PHASE SUPPLY/ MOTORS:
● 3-Phase motors have to be replaced / upgraded to run on 220v supply from the present 440v because the current supplied voltage by the govt. is consistently less than 250v This requires dismantling the bore well to bring out the motors. This will cost approx Rs 200,000
UPGRADE OF THE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT (STP)
● We’ve begun upgrading the STP from the basic system. This will allow us to clean water to a point that it can be used by a commercial RO system (to be installed). This will cost approx Rs 200,000.
INSTALL COMMERCIAL RO PLANT
● We intend to install a commercial RO plant of 500 LPH capacity that can produce 5000 liters of drinking water each day from rain/ surface/ treated grey water. Installation cost Rs 200,000
