Abandoned dog comes to VOSD for lifelong care!

NEW DOG AT VOSD: DOG NEARLY KILLED ON THE STREETS DUE TO LACK OF SURVIVAL SKILLS NOW SAFE AND HAPPY AT VOSD

A community dog caregiver in Bengaluru spotted a mixed breed dog that didn’t belong in her locality – he was probably abandoned or illegally relocated there. She took him under her wing and tried to integrate him with the rest of the stray dogs she would feed. However, they didn’t take well to the newcomer and territorial fights would break out. ‘JJ’ as she named him even sustained a few injuries in the process.

She wrote to the VOSD helpdesk wanting to surrender him since no one would adopt an adult mixed breed dog nor were the streets safe for him. We agreed to provide a permanent home and lifelong care for the pooch after the standard surrender process was followed.

Every dog that reaches the VOSD Sanctuary is initially placed under quarantine as it gives the caregiving and medical teams time to monitor their health and behaviour. JJ would howl and sing in excitement every time a team member passed his room – all he wanted to do is play! So we began taking him out on long walks and play sessions in our in-house dog parks.

However, he displayed aggression towards other male dogs and tended to attack anyone who came close to him while he was eating, so he’s fed in a safe space away from other dogs and humans. At VOSD, we take an effort to understand the animal and work continually on their behaviour through a reward-based system so they may turn a new leaf and ne happy with us for the rest of their days. We are optimistic that JJ too will realise he is safe now and shed his behavioural issues soon!

Hundreds of abandoned or illegally relocated dogs suffer on the streets due to territorial fights, lack of survival skills, and no access to food leading to starvation. To help such dogs reach the safety of the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital and receive lifelong care, we urge you to donate INR 5,000 (~$62)one-time or monthly: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/
