Feeding stray dogs can be a fulfilling act of compassion. By doing so you are preventing them from starving, improving their quality of life and even getting them friendly enough for sterilisation and yearly vaccination process. Because when you take the responsibility of feeding stray dogs without getting them sterilised, you’re not only losing on an opportunity to improve their quality of life but doing a huge injustice to them!
Let us help you in navigating through the process of feeding stray dogs as well as responsible practices that will help you avoid conflicts with other residents.
-Start by picking a spot where you plan to feed. Make sure that the spot is as much secluded from people as possible. Dogs can easily form routines and will anticipate the food at your chosen spot everyday.
-A simple meal you can offer stray dogs is boiled rice, potatoes, vegetable oil/ ghee and roti. Well-cooked throwaway meat parts (found at any local butcher) can be a budget-friendly source of protein too!
-Certain foods like chocolate, caffeine, grapes, onions and garlic must be completely avoided as they can harm the dogs’ health and in some cases, it can be extremely fatal.
-Make sure to leave behind a bowl of water, especially during these hot summer months. This small act can do wonders for the stray dogs you’re feeding.
-It’s important to stay consistent and stick to a routine while feeding stray dogs. Do not feed them too much or too often as they will get dependent on you for food. Life is uncertain and you might have to move to another place. Those stray dogs won’t be able to fend for themselves and will end up starving.
-Know that no one has the authority to stop you from feeding stray dogs, within or outside your society. However, ensure you follow a safe and responsible feeding procedure.
