Rustom, a stray dog in Bengaluru, was rounded up and mercilessly beaten by a dog hater. The severe impact on his spine caused paralysis of both his hind legs; he was left completely helpless after that episode… His natural habitat now became unfavourable to him. Having lost much of his mobility, he had trouble finding food and water. Moreover, the other stray dogs also began dominating the weak and injured Rustom.
Luckily, a rescuer spotted him and got him admitted to a hospital for a while, but due to a lack of space at the facility, the doctors asked the rescuer to take him back. There was no way a paralysed dog would be able to withstand the harsh street environment again. So, the rescuer approached VOSD to admit Rustom; he came to us under the ‘Cruelty Survivor’ category.
The terrified dog was a bit feisty at first but soon he calmed down. Physically also Rustom has undergone a transformation. He came in with a testicle infection due to urine scalding – this is common in paralysed male dogs since they soil themselves. A week-long course of antibiotics helped the infection clear up. We made a special bed made of canvas for him to prevent bed sores, and our team cleans him regularly.
He also gets nerve supplements along with physiotherapy every day, and now Rustom can stand for a few seconds while he eats! We are hopeful that he will soon walk again and at long last emerge a victor.
Hundreds of incapacitated dogs like Rustom, who would otherwise die undignified and lonely deaths find safety and medical care at VOSD. Most of all they get love and a family – something they are entirely denied on the streets.
