MEET A VOSD DOG: TRIPLE AMPUTEE MAMA SHARES HER STORY OF EVADING DEATH TWICE!

Over two years ago, the animal rescuing network was abuzz with news of a dog who had been hit by a train, causing three legs to be crushed. She was lying on the railway track, six tiny pups nursing on her, and no one was ready to help. Various NGOs near the region were contacted but everyone advised that the dog be euthanised.

One man didn’t give up on her, which is why Mama the brave girl is still alive today. VOSD’s founder Rakesh Shukla planned a meticulous rescue operation, after which she was driven over 3,000 km from Uttar Pradesh where she met with the accident, to Delhi, and subsequently all the way to Bengaluru. She was taken for an emergency surgery to amputate three out of four limbs that had been crushed beyond repair, and then began the six-month-long recovery process through which Rakesh stayed by her side day and night. She recovered and proved that Indian dogs are resilient. If given a second chance they can bounce back. That was her first narrow escape from death.

Until early 2022, Mama was in the peak of health. But then the most unexpected happened – her heart began to weaken possibly due to trauma of her accident resurfacing as she grew older. As a result, her lungs and kidneys began failing too. She dropped from a healthy 16-kg dog to 6 kg; her bones began to show as she could barely eat.

Rakesh and the VOSD team, once again, were by her side giving her the best possible medical care in the world that a dog can get. She was taken for multiple scans, fluid was drained from her lungs, she was on treatment to stabilise her kidneys, she was started on heart medication, antibiotics, renal supplements, and so on. A month of intense treatments and Mama finally gave us a sign that she will live. She perked her head up one day and cried ‘awooo’ to her papa Rakesh. She laughed in the face of death the second time. Seeing her back to her happy, active, healthy self is the most amazing reward. She eats like she used to and is 16 kg again… if not more! VOSD never gives up on its babies – they are the reason we live and function. In Rakesh’s own words, “Mama is our queen and my team and I serve her.”
