The first thing you’ll notice about Scooby, a three-year-old mixed breed Indian dog, is his captivating eyes! He’s one of VOSD’s newest residents and came to us from Chennai. His family were forced to surrender him after this once sweet pet dog began displaying signs of aggression towards a newborn baby and other family members.
Scooby was rescued as an abandoned puppy from the streets and for three years, he lived with his wonderful family. However, when the lockdown began, his days were confined within a small room or limited to short outings on the terrace. Being quite a healthy dog, he must’ve felt restricted so changes in his behaviour began surfacing.
The poor kid was frustrated – how do you explain to a dog why his humans couldn’t take him out during the pandemic lockdown? The growing resentment resulted in him not accepting the just-born infant at home. The attention shifted to the child from Scooby, which didn’t sit well with him. The family were forced to keep him tied out of fear of him harming the child. But knowing that Scooby didn’t deserve such a boxed-in life, they surrendered him to us after trying many ways to correct his behaviour and rehome him. and failing in the same.
We usually do not admit healthy pet dogs, unless all other options of getting them adopted have been exhausted, or if their behaviour and temperament are a danger to other humans/animals. Scooby is terribly afraid of strangers, loud sounds or sudden movement so at VOSD we are helping him overcome these challenges through socialising and treat-based training methods. He’s adjusted well to the people in the sanctuary and the next step will be to socialise him with dogs.
The work we do isn’t easy and it requires time, intensive effort and funds to help dogs like Scooby overcome their behavioural issues. Will you help us meet the monthly expenses of hundreds of dogs like him who are undergoing rehabilitation programmes at the VOSD Sanctuary?
Please contribute INR 5,000 (~ $68) one-time or monthly to support our work: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses
