A dog lover from Narsinghpur, a small district of Madhya Pradesh, wrote to us to admit a stray dog who was residing near her home. She found him with deep wounds on his back and was paralysed waist down the causes of which are unknown. Since it is a small town, the lack of medical amenities meant ‘Brownie’ was only given basic treatment such as topical ointment for his wounds.
The kind lady tried her best to make him mobile again by massaging his hind limbs but her efforts went in vain. Since she didn’t have adequate facilities to care for him and couldn’t leave him alone on the streets in this condition, VOSD agreed to admit him for lifelong care upon reviewing the case.
Brownie was transported to the VOSD Sanctuary Hospital by train and was kept in the quarantine section for a week under observation. Once declared free of any communicable diseases or parasites, the handsome boy was shifted to our in-house hospital to live alongside other special needs dogs.
The primary requirement for any paralysed dog is hygiene, so Brownie the medical staff help him manually relieve urine and stools daily; he is then bathed or cleaned thoroughly. Since he still has traces of his wounds, they are also dressed and monitored every day to prevent further injury or infection. To help him gain back the strength he lost when he became paralysed, the sweet boy has been put on a nutritious and special diet. He can now prop himself on his forelimbs and easily move around the hospital!
Handsome Brownie loves being around other dogs and humans… provided he is showered with treats. Seeing him mobile, healthy, and happy here is all the more reason why we wish to rehabilitate hundreds of other such special needs dogs – they continue suffering on the streets of India without medical care.
