Paralysed puppy gets a new life at VOSD

NEW DOG AT VOSD: PARALYSED PUPPY FROM PUNE GETS A NEW LIFE AT VOSD

On an autumn morning, four-month old pup Kadi and her brother were playing on a roadside when a speeding car crashed into them. The brother died on the spot and Kadi, in a bid to avert collision with the vehicle, bumped into the cemented base of an electric lamp post and became recumbent. She never stood up again…

A kind rescuer was witness to the accident and immediately rushed the pup to a hospital. The doctor informed that Kadi had suffered spinal trauma but would get better within 15 days if medicated properly. But there was no apparent improvement in her condition even after a fortnight, so a second opinion was sought. The new vets advised that physiotherapy and hot water fomentation therapy be added to the existing treatment plan.

Four months passed and Kadi still couldn’t get up. A CT scan revealed a spinal surgery could be attempted but chances of complete recovery were close to nought and the procedure would be painful. So, it was deemed best to forgo this course of action.
After fostering Kadi for nine months, the rescuer thought it would be best to find a shelter for the paralysed dog, where she could live under the surveillance of veterinary practitioners. He approached every animal sanctuary in the country but no one agreed to admit her. In the end, he approached VOSD and Kadi was surrendered to us under the ‘Special Needs’ category.

Kadi came home to us exactly a year after the accident that changed the course of her life. She is not able to get up or walk on all fours, so she drags her hindlegs to move about; this has led to multiple injuries on rear limbs. Our team cleaned and dressed her wounds immediately upon arrival. Like all paralysed dogs, Kadi has her own room at VOSD where the floors are covered with soft rubber mats to ensure her hind legs don’t suffer abrasions. She has been put on a course of nerve supplements too.

This sweet girl is very happy in the company of humans and dogs. She will spend all her remaining days amidst care and comfort with us.

Kadi was lucky that a kind rescuer saved her life but hundreds of other stray dogs meet sad, painful ends after accidents. Help VOSD provide a home to other paralysed stray dogs who have nowhere to go. Nutritious meals and medical care is all these dogs need and we make it available to them. Please consider giving a gift of INR 5,000 (~$61) one-time or monthly: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/ so we can help the voiceless.
