In March 2023, we received information from a veterinary doctor that a breeder had abandoned two American Bulldogs outside his hospital. The dogs were boarded there for a few days until their vaccinations were complete, however, a hospital was no place for two dogs to live in permanently, so he reached out to VOSD to admit them for lifelong care.
The caregiving & medical teams at the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital were shocked when the duo arrived – it became apparent they were discarded due to several genetic deformities. While one of them couldn’t stand up at all and seemed to be bumping into walls, the other appeared half the size of an adult dog of this breed. They were taken for a full physical examination to VOSD’s partner veterinary hospital in the city, where it was confirmed that:
– Luv is 90% blind in both eyes despite being just three years old and suffers from conjunctivitis
– Kush the one-year-old has developmental abnormalities and Grade 2 patellar luxation
The health issues of both dogs are irreversible so medication to manage the conditions were prescribed to prevent further deterioration. Since they were intact, the dogs were sterilised and then integrated with a group of special needs dogs living under VOSD Founder Rakesh Shukla’s direct supervision and care.
Luv and Kush are by no standard “normal” dogs, however, they live without a care in the world! They eat from the same bowl, play with any and every object they can find, and when they are tired of the fun and games they settle down for a nap. They may face umpteen health issues in the future but will be provided with the best medical treatment and care for as long as they are alive.
VOSD strongly condemns illegal and backyard breeders. Demand meets supply and only genuine dog lovers and future pet parents can fight back against this corrupt system. For the sake of owning a “breed” dog thousands of helpless canines pay the price – they are locked in unhygienic small kennels, forcefully mated and sold; and if the puppies are born with a deformity they are abandoned or suffer lifelong. Discourage backyard and unethical breeders so no more dogs like Luv & Kush with genetic deformities are born or thrown on the streets to die.
