Pet dogs are a LONG-TERM commitment. They are not stuffed toys that can be discard when they are old or people have lost interest in them.
Unfortunately, this is what happened to an elderly Spitz cross in Rajasthan. She was abandoned in a government veterinary hospital by her so-called family, when she was on the verge of death. Initially, she didn’t let anyone near her and was lashing out while bearing her teeth. Everyone thought that she was aggressive, but upon medical examination they understood that her foul temper was due to excruciating pain.
Pixie was suffering from kidney stones, a highly infected pyometra, cataract in one eye, and maggots eating her flesh. Does any living being deserve such a cruel fate? This poor girl had clearly been neglected for months which is why she reached such a sorry state. She was immediately operated on for pyometra and kidney stones, and post-recovery once her pain had subsided she calmed down.
We would like to thank Mission Paws for their wonderful efforts in saving Pixie from a terrible fate.
People expressed interest in adopting her too, but given her negative behaviour towards men probably since she didn’t trust them-she was surrendered to VOSD since she had no other home or hope.
Given how much she had undergone we didn’t want to rush Pixie into settling down in our sanctuary. She took her own time to adapt, walking about and exploring on some days, while enjoying solitude on others. Over time, we began introducing her to the other dogs and finally, she trusted us enough to let one of our male staff pet her! It was such a momentous and joyous occasion for us-proving that we can win over even the most scared or traumatised dogs with patience and love.
Old girl Pixie can finally live a healthy, safe, happy and comfortable life with us.
