After learning about a litter of mixed breed Indian puppies from Instagram, a dog lover adopted one of the babies in September 2020. ‘Pavan’ was a tiny 1.5-month-old brat with a mischievous smile and the cutest floppy ears. He was a playful, active kid who the family fell in love with! But little did they know that the ‘protective’ streak he had in him especially when it came to his toys, or his teething habits, would snowball into a nightmare…
As Pavan grew older, a violent side surfaced where he began reacting negatively to strangers and other dogs. He would lunge at them unprovoked causing serious injuries. His extremely reactive nature caused multiple incidents of him biting or harming his family members too. They followed steps by the book to curtail or change his behavioural issues – such as getting him sterelised, and taking him to a dog training academy – however, to no avail. With no option left and keeping their safety in mind, they took the hard decision of sending Pavan to VOSD after following our surrender process.
It’s been about a fortnight since he reached our sanctuary and our team of dog handlers and caregivers have been working with him every day to observe his behaviour pattern and correct it. As we study his triggers, we will begin eliminating each negative experience by ‘re-programming’ them using positive enforcements like rewards, praises and compliments, etc. Only today did he let one of our team members take him out for his first walk – but we see it as a step in the right direction!
The process of rehabilitating dogs with behavioural issues is extensive and time-consuming, but not impossible. We believe that Pavan will one day be happy and free at the VOSD Sanctuary, without letting his negative side get the better of him.
Pavan is one among hundreds of dogs who were serial biters but have gotten the second chance to reform and lead a safe, comfortable and happy life at the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital.
