Shakira used to live on the street in front of an apartment complex ever since she was a little stray pup. Some residents took care of her, while some people resented her presence vehemently and would go to any lengths to chase her away. Over the years, the anti-Shakira voices grew louder and reached a crescendo recently when several attempts were made to relocate her. The aging dog was no longer welcome in her own home street and in addition was diagnosed with diabetes and had several wounds on her body that were not healing.
Since Shakira’s home environment was rife with adversaries and her health was also on the decline, it was deemed best to surrender her to VOSD. And so, sweet little Shakira found a permanent home at our sanctuary. The transition wasn’t smooth for the mild-mannered dog. She was overcome with fear and stayed in the little corner of her room for the first several days. So, we began the socialisation process in her room itself. She got treats and lots of scratchies and soon Shakira began opening up. By and by, she became ready to venture out, explore the grounds and meet the pack.
Again, Shakira took a little while to get friendly with other dogs, but now that she is all comfortable, she loves being around both dogs and humans. Shakira basks all the attention and care she receives at VOSD; and is finally at a place where her presence is valued.
While it is extremely sad that Shakira was driven away from her home by an intolerant group of people, it is quite a relief that she finally found her way to VOSD, where she can feel a sense of belongingness and heal from the hostile rejection she had to endure in the earlier part of her life.
