In 2019, a mixed-breed Indian dog named Moti from Chandigarh was beaten black and blue at a taxi stand — this heinous act was recorded on a mobile phone by one of the men at the stand! The poor dog was then dislocated to a far-off area called Mullanpur. Two women who would feed and care for Moti every day panicked when they couldn’t find him. After a relentless search, they eventually retrieved the dog after two days. Moti and his female companion Billo were moved to foster care for recovery and later brought to the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital so they could live without fear or pain for the rest of their lives.

Rescues like this are possible only when there is an exceptional situation that demands our intervention and local options have been exhausted. In Moti’s case, we had the commitment of the local rescuers to safeguard the dog and take ownership of medication and other complexities. To bear the enormous cost of transporting both the dogs, we created a fundraiser online.
While Billo passed away last year due to renal failure, Moti is a happy and cheerful boy who loves to entertain us with his antics! Be it donning the caregivers’ hats and sunglasses, or shutting their laptops down demanding scratchies, he is truly a joker. He is the gentlest pooch in the sanctuary and is equally loved by our other furbabies and humans alike.

In the past ten years, we have grown from having zero to hundreds of dogs rescued from different parts of the country. Over the next few years, we wish to expand because thousands of dogs still roam the streets without a home or hope. Many of them are victims of physical or emotional, accidents, other forms of cruelty, health issues, or old age — our doors are always open for them.
