A stray dog lived unobtrusively in a building complex in Mumbai. The sweet pooch was very gentle and shy right from when she was born, so they named her Sharmili. Recently, the people in the housing society started opposing the presence of stray dogs in and around the area. Consequently, the managing committee of a residential complex hired bouncers to beat the dogs away. In one such chasing episode, a bouncer hit Sharmili so hard with sticks; that the impact ultimately caused her hind legs to be paralysed.

Sharmili’s caretaker was deeply disturbed by the cruelty inflicted on the society dogs, so she filed a petition with the Bombay HC and won the court’s allegiance. The Bench decreed, “It would be an obligation of the Society to follow the mandate of Law and to prevent themselves from causing any cruelty & harassment to the animals, as also to those, who care for these animals.”

It was definitely a victory for animals and their keepers but Sharmili had to contend with the reality of being paralysed, homeless and unfit to survive on the busy streets of Mumbai. And so, Sharmili came to VOSD Sanctuary and Hospital for lifelong care.

We are trying to provide Sharmili the best care possible; she is bathed and cleaned regularly as she tends to soil herself due to loss of bladder control. We have put her on a strength-gaining diet and the little pooch is also hand-fed by her caregivers. Sharmili has her own mini-soft bed which will help in preventing further injury to her pelvic region.

Sharmili was at the receiving end of people’s inexplicable hate but luckily she found friends who truly care for her well-being at VOSD. She will spend the whole rest of her life with us; we’ll cherish and nobody will ever again resent her presence.

Help us bring more dogs like Sharmili to the security of VOSD by donating INR 5,000 (~$61) one-time or monthly: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/
