A speeding truck ran over Birju on a fateful December day last year. The poor dog’s hind legs were severely injured in the collision. After a kind passerby informed the VOSD SAW team of the accident, they rushed to the location and immediately rescued Birju, who was found wailing in extreme pain.
Birju was admitted to Animal Rescue Trust NGO, in Pune where doctors began his treatment promptly; with sustained interventions they were able to save one of Birju’s hind legs but his other leg had to be amputated. It took Birju months to completely recover from his injuries and the surgery. But now Birju had nowhere to go; he couldn’t be left back on the streets because without a hind leg, Birju wouldn’t be able to navigate the perilous streetlife.
So, Birju came home to VOSD for lifelong care. Our sanctuary is situated in the idyllic countryside, where there is no traffic or blasting car horns; there are only trees, birdsong and friendly caretakers to keep our dogs company and the setting certainly agrees with Birju. He roams across the sprawling grounds, sniffs everything cheerfully and breathes in the fresh air without any fear of violent mishaps.
He’s been put on a strength-gaining nutritious diet and he seems to be getting stronger and healthier by the day. Birju’s social life is also thriving at VOSD, he’s made friends with Rani, a paralysed dog who has now started walking, and very much enjoys lounging with her on cement mounds under the trees.
Birju’s life did change completely on the day of the accident. Had he not received timely help, he would have cried until he perished. But the Gods were kind and Birju did get rescued, recovered from his injuries and found a forever, loving home.
