In September last year, a dog lover running a dog shelter in Bengaluru sent us a desperate plea to provide permanent residence for 50+ dogs whom she was housing. The lady and her husband were unable to care for the dogs anymore, due to multiple health and financial issues.
Unfortunately, things also took a turn for the worse when one of the locals got hold of three of her dogs and shot them. Before official action could be taken, the deceased dogs were taken away by some unknown persons. Not wanting to put the rest of her dogs at risk, she urged that we accept her dogs.
VOSD agreed to admit every single pooch without a surrender fee! Overnight, large enclosures were kept ready for the dogs who began arriving in batches. We were informed that they were accustomed to living in groups, so we divided them based on their size and strength.
To date, these 50+ dogs are the most peaceful and friendly bunch we have ever seen. They coexist beautifully, allowing each other to thrive and grow. Some of them were quite weak when they first arrived but have now blossomed into healthy, happy babies. One of them named Kharabath even turned blood donor for another ailing dog!
Cone Ice, Cadbury, Jangri & Jalebi, Kadaknath, Hopscotch, Felix, Peggy, Pradeep & Prathap, Buttercup, Babu Rao, and so on… naming all the dogs was so much fun! Over the past year, we have discovered that each possesses a unique personality too – some are singers, Nutty is an acrobat who can climb over any wall even as high as 15 feet, Janasheen is a bum-wiggler when she sees her favorite human and Butterscotch can attack you with hundred kisses in a few minutes!
We urge you to contribute to the upkeep of these angels. If you can donate INR 5,000 (~$68) one-time or monthly towards their care it would be amazing. Support us to save India’s neglected and abused dogs– VOSD will always be home for a dog in need.
