A dog lover residing in Bengaluru reached out to VOSD to admit three stray dogs who lived in the basement parking lot of her building. The trio had faced endless harassment from most of the residents who claimed that the dogs would “attack and bite”, however none of the animal lovers in the same campus had ever faced such a situation.
Despite repeatedly requesting the resident welfare association (RWA) for evidence about these alleged attacks, they failed to provide any. Yet, the dog hating residents made multiple attempts to ILLEGALLY relocate the dogs through 2021.
On two occasions, the dog lovers caring for Bahubali, Pokoo and Blacky managed to locate and bring them back. However, during the last attempt to remove the dogs from the building, the pooches were beaten up by security guards in the basement and herded out of the gate to trap them. Bloody stains & paw marks in the basement horrified their caretakers.
Eventually, those in favour of the dogs staying in the building also began facing harassment, and were threatened that the dogs would be harmed further and even poisoned. Hence, Bahubali, Pokoo and Blacky were surrendered to VOSD under the ‘Cruelty Survivor’ category, as it was the only way to safeguard & provide them a good home.
The poor dogs were so scared of people when they first arrived at our sanctuary – they would hide in a corner of the room and tremble in fear. It took weeks for our staff to socialise and bring them out of their shell. They were eventually shifted to a larger enclosure of their own, where they began interacting more freely with our team. They love snacking on treats, so we make sure to give them their share every week!
VOSD is the only home and hope for strays who face the wrath of dog-hating humans, who will stoop to any extent to harm these poor souls. Many of them are deeply traumatised due to being beaten, hit with stones, cut with barbed wires, burnt with hot water, and so on. We readily accept such cruelty survivors without charging a surrender fees, and provide them all the care & comfort they need for the rest of their lives. Help us meet the monthly food & medical expenses of hundreds of dogs who have faced & survived cruelty by donating INR 5,000 (~$68) one-time or monthly: www.vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/
NOTE: www.vosd.in/strays-in-neighbourhoods/. While at times, sending community dogs to a sanctuary or boarding centre is the only way to save their lives, it not the preferred solution. Dog lovers must stand up to resident welfare associations for the rights of strays. We hope that Bahubali, Pokoo and Blacky’s caretakers are able to take legal action against those who abused and harmed these innocent souls, who have every right to live in peace just as much as we humans do.
