Pet dog abandoned during first lockdown is living peacefully at VOSD

MEET A VOSD DOG: JOHNNY WHO WAS MERCILESSLY ABANDONED DURING COVID HAS FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME WITH US

Your parents raise you for a few years, and during a crisis they throw you out onto the streets. Can you imagine if this were to happen to a human child? That’s exactly was Johnny, a pet dog, underwent during the lockdown last year. His family abandoned him mercilessly on the streets when they were facing some troubles due to the pandemic. He was so lost and confused and in order to defend himself, he began attacking other male stray dogs.

Luckily, he was rescued before the situation got out of hand and he was surrendered to VOSD. For the first two days he seemed to be alright but then a series of health issues surfaced – he began having nasal discharge and a cough, and would refuse to eat. A vet check-up revealed that he was suffering from the early stages of pneumonia and liver ailments, for which he was on medication for three months.

We include alternative therapy such as Ayurveda and Homeopathy for our dogs. So Johnny was put on an herbal liver tonic, homeopathic drops for his lung infection, and broad spectrum antibiotics too. Over time, he steadily began improving; so did his diet!

It’s been over six months since this sweet boy came to us and we’re happy that he has recovered fully. The only aspect that hasn’t changed about Johnny though, is his distrust in people. He’s perfectly okay with going on walks and being left to run around in our in-house dog parks, but he prefers not being touched. This probably stems from his past experience of being abandoned, hence, not being able to love or trust freely. We’re working with him routinely to help him overcome his issues, and we’ll stay by his side no matter how long it takes.

No pet dog ever deserves to be deserted. Our hearts go out to those suffering on the streets after being thrown away like trash by their families, but with YOUR help we can give them a home. Please donate INR 5,000 (~$68) one-time or regularly to VOSD so that we can admit and care for hundreds of abandoned pet dogs who are suffering without a home or hope: www.vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/.
