The streets of India are a nightmare for stray dogs who struggle to survive every day, at times dodging vehicles, on other days facing the extreme weather. During one such heavy downpour, a lady spotted a pregnant mixed breed Indian dog suffering in the rain without shelter or food. She knew the lives of mother and babies were at risk so she rescued and admitted her at a boarding centre.
Over the next few months, the eight healthy puppies got adopted and mama dog was spayed. However, when time came for her release, the rescuer noticed she couldn’t survive again on the streets – the months of being in safety and under human care meant Kali couldn’t independently fend for herself. She was thus surrendered to VOSD under the “rescued stray dog” category, instead of being put at the risk of starving or dying on the streets.
Once at VOSD, Kali quickly befriended our caregivers but would lunge at, chase, and attack any dog she saw. We gradually took her on walks around the campus, introduced her to our other babies in a safe space, and left her outdoors for progressively longer hours so she could acclimatise to the sanctuary. Within a few weeks, she had found her own pack whom she loves hanging out with every day! This transformation truly brought us joy because now Kali not only has a forever home, but a doggo family too!
Stray dogs suffer the most due to lack of food, shelter, clean drinking water and medical intervention if they are ill or injured. VOSD admits such canines who can’t survive on the streets or be adopted, and ensures they have the best life at our sanctuary. You can help us care for helpless vulnerable pooches like Kali by donating INR 5,000 ($65) one-time or monthly towards their food & medical expenses: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/.
