MEET A VOSD DOG: BLINDED “JUST FOR FUN”, YET CHAMPA DOESN’T LET HER CRUEL PAST DULL HER BRIGHT FUTURE AT VOSD

The door is slightly ajar, she senses an opportunity and sneaks in for the prize. She grabs it and she’s out in a flash! We’re talking about our thief Champa, who is a master at flicking boiled eggs from the kitchen 🙂 For a dog who has only 10% vision, we’re amazed at how accurately she can spot and rob her favourite food.

This happy & playful street dog used to live in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, and was dearly loved. However, her life changed in one night because of some cruel boys. They poured detergent all over her eyes and face as they wanted to see how a dog becomes blind. Her caretaker, who spotted the dog later that night, figured something was wrong and rushed her to a vet who sadly confirmed that Champa’s eyes were affected beyond repair.

After a few weeks of treatment, the pooch was back on the same street but was hit multiple times since she couldn’t navigate her way between vehicles. Living in the small village of Jhalawar, her caretaker found it difficult to provide a better lifestyle for her. She also feared villagers illegally relocating, or worse killing Champa, so she requested us to admit her for lifelong care. VOSD accepts cruelty survivors and blind stray dogs without a surrender fee, and the dear pooch was soon on her way to our sanctuary in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

We soon realised that barely being able to see was not a deterrent to Champa – she happily goes about her active and entertaining routine every day. Her day starts with breakfast, followed by an intense session of digging the ground. Then she settles for a nap… we joke that she can even sleep through a storm! Of course, she’s hungry after a nap so that’s when she plots to steal eggs from the kitchen, not knowing that if she waits for a few more minutes she’ll be served her sumptuous evening meal 😛 And then it’s back to playing, digging, running around, eating some more, and sleeping.

VOSD is the only sanctuary in the country which can provide cruelty survivors and blind dogs like Champa a comfortable, safe and happy home where they don’t ever have to worry about being hurt again. Please help us care for these sweet dogs by donating INR 5,000 (~$68) towards their monthly food & medical expenses: https://vosd.in/active-campaigns/monthly-expenses/
